The Ethernet Disk interface is fast, responsive, and easy to use. The device itself requires no other configuration, it works perfectly right out of the box, and all the administrator has to do is add users and shares. The bundled configuration tool works perfectly under Windows, and I was able to alter the default IP with no problems. I was unable to get the tool to do anything useful, but its existence is a fair indication that LaCie at least acknowledges the need for Linux support.

Although LaCie provides no documentation or support for configuration from a Linux system, the software utility CD does appear to have a nonfunctional, experimental, Java-based configuration tool specifically for Linux users. I was unable to configure the device from my Linux desktop. If your network environment uses Linux exclusively, the Ethernet Disk is probably not for you. The front of the case has LEDs to indicate drive status, and a power button with a blue light behind it. I was unable to get pictures of the inside of the case, because opening the Ethernet Disk effectively voids the warranty. The Ethernet Disk is slim and elegant, and it looks nice almost anywhere. The weight of the Ethernet Disk isn't listed in the documentation, but it feels comparable to the ReadyNAS. Protocols: CIFS/SMB, AFP, FTP, HTTP Form factor and caseĪlthough it is only available in 19 inch 1U rackmount form factor, the sturdy grey case fits nicely under my monitor.

It uses simple concatenation (JBOD), which means that it is faster, but incapable of offering the data integrity protection of traditional RAID. The Ethernet Disk does not have support for configurable RAID levels. The review unit I received features a brand-new edition of the Ethernet Disk firmware, which includes GroupLogic's ExtremeZ-IP AFP server.

The Ethernet Disk is primarily an office-oriented device, and it is designed to handle a large number of simeltaneous connections. Integration with key MDM partners including MobileIron, Good Technology and Citrix Worx.I tested the LaCie Ethernet Disk 1 TB, which has a 733 Mhz CPU, 128 MB of ram, and runs on Windows XP embedded.Push selected content to users or groups for any time, on-device access.Intuitive, familiar interfaces require virtually no end-user training.Smart Card authentication support (CAC/PIV).
